As technology makes working together easier than ever, the moments when we actually meet are becoming more valuable. Perhaps it is time to rethink what a business meeting should achieve.
A new question for event professionals
We can meet without travelling. Brainstorm without sharing a room. Present to colleagues across borders and ask AI to summarize the meeting before we have even closed our laptops. Work has become more efficient.
And yet, there are things efficiency cannot replace. The conversation that continues over dinner. The idea that emerges during a walk rather than a scheduled brainstorm. Colleagues discovering a completely different side of each other while taking on a challenge together. Or simply having enough time and space to talk without the next online meeting starting in five minutes.
Perhaps that is why the question for event professionals is changing.
[Uitgelicht citaat] Not simply “Where should we meet?” but “What should bringing everyone together actually achieve?”
From meeting time to meaningful time
When people make the effort to travel and spend a day or several days together, expectations are higher. A room, a screen and good coffee are no longer the answer. A successful offsite should create something that is much harder to achieve online: connection.
That changes how meetings can be designed. Instead of organizing the meeting, team activity, dinner and overnight stay as separate elements, they can become one experience. Start with a strategy session in the morning. Take the conversation outside after lunch. Challenge the team with an activity. Share dinner without watching the clock. Stay overnight and continue the next morning. Suddenly, the informal moments between program elements can become just as valuable as the program itself.
[Uitgelicht citaat] Being connected is not necessarily the same as feeling connected
Sometimes you need to get away to come closer
This is where an environment can make a genuine difference. At Center Parcs Meetings & Events, nature is not simply the view outside the meeting room. It is part of the experience. Forests, lakes, beaches and open spaces create a setting that feels removed from everyday working life. Yet many of our locations are surprisingly close to the cities, airports and transport connections people are travelling from. Just far enough to disconnect and close enough to make sense. Park Zandvoort, for example, combines the Dutch coast with proximity to Haarlem, Amsterdam and Schiphol and is accessible by public transport. De Eemhof offers another very different natural setting, centrally located near Utrecht, Amsterdam and Schiphol.
What happens when the meeting ends?
Imagine finishing the formal program and not having everyone immediately disappear into taxis, trains or hotel rooms. Instead, your team steps outside. Depending on the location and objective, the next part of the program could be active, creative or simply relaxing. Center Parcs offers activities ranging from adventure experiences and escape rooms to bowling and beach clean-ups. Afterwards, there is dinner. Time to talk. Perhaps another drink. And rather than travelling home, colleagues can stay in cottages surrounded by nature and continue the experience the following morning. It is a very different rhythm from the traditional nine-to-five meeting. And that is precisely the point.
One destination. Many possibilities.
A leadership retreat for twenty people requires something entirely different from an annual conference for hundred. A team-building program has another objective than a conference or incentive. Center Parcs Meetings & Events brings those possibilities together in one destination: meeting facilities, accommodation, restaurants, activities and nature.
For organizations wanting to take the idea even further, there is another possibility: an entire park like Limburgse Peel or Parc Sandur can be transformed into a company’s own temporary “village”. The venue is no longer simply the place where your event happens, but actually becomes part of the event itself?
Make getting together count
Technology will continue to make our working lives faster, smarter and more connected. That does not make meeting in person less important. It makes choosing when, why and how we meet more important.
So perhaps the next great business meeting should not feel like another day at work in a different building.
Give people room to think.
Give them something to experience together.
Give conversations time to continue.
And occasionally, give everyone permission to get away.
Because sometimes getting away from the everyday is exactly what brings a team closer together.
MEET. CONNECT. EXPERIENCE.
