Aeromexico celebrates decade of connectivity between Amsterdam and Mexico City

Aeromexico celebrated a significant milestone this week, marking ten years of direct operations between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Mexico City. Since the inaugural flight on May 30, 2016, the route has evolved from a three-times-weekly service into a robust daily operation that serves as a cornerstone of the airline’s European network.

Reflecting on the decade-long journey, Mark Mooren, Aeromexico’s Country Manager for the Netherlands, emphasized the importance of pausing to celebrate growth despite the rapid pace of the modern travel industry.

“Time flies when you are having fun,” Mooren remarked during an anniversary event attended by partners and Her Excellency Carmen Moreno Toscano, the Ambassador of Mexico to the Netherlands. “It is important to stand still for a moment and celebrate important milestones, together with business relations and partners.”

From Startup to Strategic Hub

When the route launched in 2016, the objective was to establish a presence in a competitive market. Mooren, who joined the airline in 2017, noted that the success of the route relied heavily on strategic partnerships, particularly with KLM.

“The home market in the Netherlands is relatively small,” Mooren explained. “Thanks to Schiphol Airport and thanks to our SkyTeam friends, we developed the right business mix with both travelers from the Netherlands finding our flight, as well as many travelers departing from other countries in Europe and connecting via Amsterdam.”

The airline’s local strategy also involved creative brand awareness campaigns, including high-profile sponsorships with PSV Eindhoven during a period when the club featured several prominent Mexican players. This helped cement Aeromexico’s visibility in both the B2B and B2C segments of the Dutch market.

A New Era of Growth

Following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mooren stated that the airline has emerged “stronger than ever.” Aeromexico now manages a global network of 120 routes, supported by a fleet of 166 aircraft.

The airline’s commitment to service has not gone unnoticed. In 2026, for the seventh consecutive year, Aeromexico was recognized as a 5-star airline by APEX and was voted the Best Airline of North America. Furthermore, the carrier achieved world-leading status for on-time performance in 2024 and 2025, maintaining a 99.7% completion factor.

Looking Ahead

As the airline enters its second decade in Amsterdam, the focus shifts toward further product enhancement and network expansion. Recent and upcoming initiatives include:

  • Fleet Upgrades: Ongoing refurbishment of the 787 Dreamliner fleet to ensure consistent cabin configuration.

  • Enhanced Experience: Introduction of new amenity kits in partnership with the French brand Lancel, alongside a modernized app and website.

  • Infrastructure: Recently renovated check-in areas and brand-new lounges at Mexico City International Airport, prepared ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

  • Network Expansion: New routes to Ecuador and Honduras, alongside expanded European connectivity with new flights from Paris and Barcelona to Mexico City.

“The Amsterdam-Mexico City route is playing an important role, and it has become an integral part of the Aeromexico network,” said Mooren. “We would like to continue with all of you to further build our position in the market during the next 10 years.”
