United Airlines launches Relax Row: ‘lie flat’ in economy

United Airlines announced the launch of the United Relax Row: an innovative seating option within United Economy that transforms into a couch-like configuration, offering customers greater comfort on long-haul flights. United is the first North American airline to introduce this type of seating and holds exclusive rights to the design in the region.

The United Relax Row consists of a dedicated row of three seats equipped with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle. This creates additional space for passengers to sleep, stretch out, or enjoy in-flight entertainment more comfortably. The new option is particularly suited for families with young children, couples, and solo travelers seeking added comfort while remaining in the Economy cabin.

Customers booking the United Relax Row will receive additional onboard amenities, including a custom-fitted mattress pad, a plush blanket, two extra pillows, and—for families—a soft toy and a dedicated Children’s Travel Kit.

The United Relax Row is expected to launch in 2027. By 2030, United plans to install the seating on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft. The seats will be positioned between United Economy and United Premium Plus®, with up to 12 Relax Row sections available per aircraft.

“As a leading premium airline, we are committed to delivering innovative, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers, and the United Relax Row is a great example of that,” said Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines. “Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve more options when it comes to space and comfort, and this product allows us to meet that need. United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row, which continues to strengthen customer loyalty.”

The United Relax Row is part of United’s broader effort to make travel easier and more enjoyable for families. Additional initiatives include:

  • Free family seating: United offers a dynamic seat map that enables children under 12 to sit next to an accompanying adult at no additional cost during booking. If necessary, families are automatically reassigned to ensure they are seated together.
  • Kids’ meals onboard: On select flights with complimentary meals, children can choose from dedicated breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Meals can be pre-ordered via the United app or website.
  • Family-friendly inflight entertainment: United provides a curated entertainment selection for families, featuring popular titles such as Bluey, Paw Patrol, Zootopia 2, and Paddington in Peru.
  • Children’s Travel Kit: Developed in collaboration with Sesame Street, the kit includes interactive activities such as an Oscar the Grouch activity book, a slide puzzle, and a sensory calming strip.

With the introduction of the United Relax Row, United Airlines continues to enhance comfort and flexibility for travelers across all cabin classes.
