Icelandic airline Play has ceased all operations as of September 29, 2025. The abrupt shutdown brings an end to the low-cost carrier, which had been operating flights from Keflavík International Airport to destinations in Europe and North America since 2021.
According to a company statement, weak ticket sales in recent weeks and negative media coverage were the main reasons behind the decision. Earlier, Play had already announced plans to discontinue all its transatlantic routes in October. A proposal to transfer its air operator certificate to Malta also failed to resolve the financial difficulties.
The closure means that all scheduled flights have been canceled, and around 400 employees are losing their jobs. Passengers are advised to seek alternative flights. Customers who paid by credit card may request a refund through their card issuer, while those who booked via a tour operator are referred back to their travel provider.
Play operated a fleet of Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. The company was founded in 2019 as a successor to defunct carrier WOW air and sought to position itself as a budget option on the Europe–North America market.
