Pieter Elbers has resigned as Chief Executive Officer of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo), effective immediately. The Board of Directors expressed their gratitude for Elbers’ service and his contribution to the airline’s growth during his tenure.
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director and founder of IndiGo, will assume interim management responsibilities until a permanent successor is appointed. The company stated that a new leader is expected to be announced shortly.
Strategic Focus on Operational Excellence
According to Board Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta, Bhatia’s return to the day-to-day management aims to strengthen the company’s culture and reinforce its commitment to operational excellence and reliable service.
Bhatia, who founded the airline 22 years ago, emphasized his dedication to the carrier’s future: “IndiGo will continue to sharpen its strategic focus on serving India with an airline that is professionally managed, operationally reliable, and globally respected,” he stated.
A Career Marked by Aviation Leadership
Before joining IndiGo in late 2022, Pieter Elbers was a defining figure at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He spent 30 years at the Dutch flag carrier, serving as President and CEO from 2014 to 2022. During his leadership at KLM, Elbers was widely credited with navigating the airline through the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining the carrier’s autonomy within the Air France-KLM Group. His transition to IndiGo was seen as a major move into the rapidly expanding Indian market.
