A new hospitality project, Elements by Dutchen, officially opened its doors on January 2, 2026. Located in the dunes near Formerum aan Zee, the development introduces 16 hotel rooms and 25 luxury apartments to the island’s north coast, positioned within walking distance of the beach and a short distance from the village of Midsland.
Architecture and Design
The project was designed by Marc Koehler Architects, with interior work by Hinabaay Interior & Design. The structure is integrated into the natural elevation of the dunes, utilizing large glass facades to provide panoramic views of the North Sea and the surrounding nature reserve. The design employs a palette of natural textures and sand-colored tones intended to reflect the local landscape.
Accommodations and Facilities
The property offers a mix of short-stay and family-oriented housing:
-
Hotel Rooms & Suites: 16 units featuring private balconies with views of the sea, woods, or dunes.
-
Apartments: 25 units designed for 4 to 6 guests, equipped with full kitchens and laundry facilities, aimed at families and groups.
-
Wellness: An on-site spa center featuring a heated indoor pool, Finnish sauna, and steam room. The facility operates in partnership with the Dutch brand The|Tides, offering specialized “BrainBodyMind” treatments.
Culinary: Restaurant DÚN
Located on the second floor of the building, Restaurant DÚN serves as the property’s primary dining venue. The kitchen is led by chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot, the duo behind the Amsterdam-based Michelin-starred 212 Group. The restaurant focuses on a bistro-style menu utilizing island-sourced ingredients, including local cockles, North Sea fish, and sea buckthorn. The space includes a south-facing terrace and is open to both hotel guests and the general public.
Location and Accessibility
Elements is situated at Badweg Formerum 10, approximately 13 kilometers from the ferry terminal at West-Terschelling. The site provides direct access to the beach and is adjacent to the De Koegelwieck nature reserve.
