European Sleeper has acquired the GreenCityTrip brand from Flywise Travel. GreenCityTrip will continue as an independent tour operator offering rail package holidays by night train. The move marks an important step for European Sleeper in introducing a wider audience to night train travel while offering passengers greater comfort and convenience.
European Sleeper, the Dutch–Belgian railway company behind the popular Brussels–Amsterdam–Berlin–Prague night train, has operated more than 650 trains and carried over 200,000 passengers in just two years. With plans to expand routes to Barcelona and/or Milan, the acquisition allows European Sleeper to offer complete travel packages and reach new market segments.
Since October 2021, Flywise Travel has positioned GreenCityTrip as a new way to promote sustainable rail travel. By launching night train routes to Berlin, Dresden and Prague, GreenCityTrip responded to growing demand for sustainable and affordable alternatives. The brand’s partnerships with major retail chains such as Albert Heijn, HEMA and Kruidvat have demonstrated its reach and influence in the Dutch travel market.
European Sleeper co-founder Chris Engelsman said: “This acquisition brings strong synergies for European Sleeper. The GreenCityTrip packages perfectly complement our international train ticket offering and open up a new market segment for us. It will also make it easier to expand the range of package holidays both geographically and in terms of new customer segments.”
Pascal van de Sande added: “GreenCityTrip has shown that sustainable train travel can be both attractive and accessible. Together with European Sleeper, we aim to build on that foundation by developing new travel concepts that make it even easier for travellers to choose the night train as part of their holiday.”
The close cooperation between European Sleeper and Flywise Travel, which began in early 2024, is now formalised through this acquisition. Flywise Travel will continue to operate as a tour operator but will no longer focus on night train travel. The GreenCityTrip brand name will remain in use, and the existing travel offering will continue. The transaction is expected to be finalised shortly.
European Sleeper is a Dutch–Belgian railway company dedicated to operating night trains. Founded by Elmer van Buuren and Chris Engelsman, two passionate advocates of overnight rail travel, the company is part of the movement that has brought night trains back onto the European map. Its first service between Berlin and Brussels departed on 25 May 2023 and was extended to Dresden and Prague in 2024. New routes to Barcelona and/or Milan are currently under development for 2026.
