Booking.com: ‘LGBTQ+ Business Travelers still facing safety concerns’

While the global business travel market is projected to reach $2.4 trillion by 2031, new research from Booking.com reveals that many LGBTQ+ travelers continue to face discomfort during business trips. In the Netherlands, only 61% of LGBTQ+ travelers report feeling comfortable while traveling for work, while nearly one in five (18%) experience feelings of stress or anxiety.

The findings highlight that although many employees have limited influence over their business destinations, this can present significant challenges for LGBTQ+ travelers who may find themselves in locations where they feel less safe or welcomed.

Uncertainty caused by a lack of information and support Nearly half of LGBTQ+ travelers (48%) report consciously choosing to be less open about their identity during business trips to avoid potential risks. The research indicates that many travelers feel inadequately supported by their employers due to a lack of clear information about their destination. Only 60% feel well-informed in advance regarding local laws and regulations concerning LGBTQ+ rights. Furthermore, only 51% indicate that their employer communicates clearly about travel policies and available support.

While 61% state that their direct manager shows understanding for their concerns, more than half (53%) do not feel comfortable discussing these issues openly.

Impact on career opportunities The impact extends beyond the travel experience itself, influencing professional decisions and career trajectories. More than half of LGBTQ+ employees (53%) say they have turned down a business opportunity due to concerns about safety or a lack of employer support. Additionally, 48% have consciously chosen not to apply to organizations that lack clear policies or protections for LGBTQ+ employees who travel for business.

The decision to decline a business trip does not always feel like a free choice either, as only 57% of Dutch respondents feel comfortable refusing a trip to a high-risk destination without fear of negative career consequences.

Building confidence through clear policies Employers play a critical role in creating a safe and inclusive travel experience. Six out of ten respondents (60%) indicate that an organization’s policy regarding the protection of LGBTQ+ business travelers influences their choice of employer. Clear communication about travel policies, practical support, and accessible information regarding local conditions can help eliminate uncertainty and build confidence among employees traveling internationally.

“Business travel offers valuable opportunities for professional development, but our research shows that many LGBTQ+ travelers still face significant uncertainties,” says Kristofer Barber, Travel Proud Sponsor at Booking.com. “By providing travelers with access to relevant information and support, we can contribute to a more inclusive travel and hospitality sector, where people feel supported and confident, regardless of where their work takes them.”
