KLM tests sustainability innovations during Aviation Challenge

KLM and KLM Cityhopper took part in The Aviation Challenge (TAC) for the fourth consecutive year — an initiative by the SkyTeam alliance designed to encourage airlines worldwide to operate more sustainably.

Unlike previous editions that focused on a single flight, KLM opted for a broader approach this year. Between 4 and 10 October, flights to Rome, Nairobi, and Krakow were used to test a variety of sustainability initiatives. By trialing several proven measures across multiple routes, KLM was able to better assess which actions deliver real impact and how they can be structurally integrated into daily operations.

Testing new innovations
During the challenge, KLM tested a range of innovations. An AI model was used to calculate the exact amount of water needed on board, reducing unnecessary weight and fuel consumption. Pilots tested a new eco-flight tool designed to optimize flight efficiency and minimize emissions. World Business Class passengers could pre-order their meals, helping to reduce food waste. Passengers were also encouraged to travel light and use digital boarding passes, which since May 2024 has already cut paper use by 84%. In addition, KLM experimented with filtered seawater as an alternative to regular drinking water, and passengers who added an extra SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) contribution to their ticket received priority boarding.

Broader social impact
Beyond its operational initiatives, KLM also collaborates with Wings of Support, a foundation established by KLM employees that supports local projects providing children around the world with better access to education and healthcare. Through these combined efforts, KLM demonstrates that sustainability is not just about ambition — it is becoming a visible and tangible part of its daily operations.

Looking ahead
The Aviation Challenge Awards will be presented in January 2026. This year’s edition emphasizes measurable impact, with awards in four main categories: Direct Impact, Inspiration, Leadership, and Organisational Transformation. These categories will recognize the most impactful sustainability solutions, inspiring stories, groundbreaking collaborations, and initiatives that promote education and sustainable innovation across the aviation industry.
